It's one thing to create delicious Chilean-style empanadas, it's entirely something else to use that traditional dish as the key ingredient for creating a vibrant community in the heart of San Francisco's Mission District. But that's exactly what Paula Tejeda has been doing at Chile Lindo since the 90s, when she became the third owner of this charming little Chilean coffee shop and deli, which originally opened in 1971.
Located in the historic Redstone Building at 16th and Capp Streets, Chile Lindo is one of Gaetani's many remarkable commercial tenants. In addition to their famous empanadas, coffee, and a nice selection of beer and wine, the shop also sells Completos (Chilean hot dogs), traditional Chilean casseroles such as Pastel de Choclo (beef and chicken) and Chupe de Camarón (shrimp), and a number of specialty Chilean pastries such as Torte de Mil Hojas (thousand layered cake) that can't be found anywhere else in San Francisco. In addition to the take out menu, the café also offers catering for private events.
And beyond the fantastic fare, Childe Lindo is also a community cultural gem, hosting Friday evening jazz ensembles in partnership with the San Francisco Arts Commission, which Tejeda calls the "Childe Lindo Kitchen Culture."
